Woman at War (Iceland/France/Ukraine – Icelandic with English subtitles) is Iceland’s nominee submission for the 2019 Academy Awards. Halla, a choirmaster who loves her job, has just learned she has been approved to adopt a child from a war-torn area in the Ukraine, a long time dream of hers. However, Halla is an eco-terrorist, fighting against politicians and industry who have been ruining Iceland’s rugged landscape. She is taking action, but wonders if it would be more fulfilling to save hypothetical future lives or the one actual life of the daughter she has yet to meet – and may never if she is apprehended.
